Types of Burns

The three classifications of burns include the following

  • First Degree Burn – Only the top layer of skin is burned and has some redness or mild inflammation.
  • Second Degree Burn – Damage beyond the top layer of skin which causes extreme redness, swelling and blistered skin which could ooze. This could result in a longer-healing injury and increase the risk of infection.
  • Third Degree Burn – This is the most severe type of burn which damages through multiple layers of skin and can affect tissue such as muscles, organs, and bones. Charring of the skin can occur which can be black or white. Nerve damage is common and blood vessel damage is usually permanent. Third degree burns to the limbs may result in amputations. Third degree burns have a massive risk of infection and can result in the wrongful death.
